The Path to Non-Dieting

Updated: Jun 21, 2022

The road less travelled by is the path one walks when re-discovering how to eat and feed the soul. This path goes by many names; non-dieting, normal eating, moderation, intuitive or mindful eating. And can look vastly different: a steep mountain slope, a flat cobblestone path, a winding staircase or a stormy sea.

Yet despite name or form, all provide a re-connection and experiential challenge to what we thought we knew about caring for ourselves.

As we embark on our journey, we make provisions to keep ourselves safe. We tell loved ones our plans, we gather tools and resources to guide our travels. We may take a road map or prefer to seek a guide that has walked some or all of the path before us. We may stop and ask directions of those who live along the path.

"Two roads diverged in a wood and I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference” - Robert Frost

Sometimes we may go it alone.

When we set out on this path, we are delving into the unknown or perhaps forgotten. There is fear, anxiety and doubt that swirl around you, which threaten to derail and mislead you. There may even be the loss of hope that you will be able to find your way through the overgrown trees.

It may appear to others and perhaps yourself that you are being selfish in walking this path. That taking steps in unfamiliar territory is somehow wrong and dangerous.

Yet with each stride you notice something different about the scenery on this path. For the first time since you can remember you can feel the sunshine on your skin, smell the freshness of the breeze and see the light dance on the water of the lake. You can hear the crunch of the leaves underfoot and sense a hint of calmness that stands alongside you.

You realise that you are your own best guide on this path and that there is no final destination, just moments along the way. You feel comfortable at walking a certain pace on some days and resting when you feel weary. You give yourself permission to experience joy and satisfaction in whatever form it may come. And when you experience hardship along the road, you embrace the struggle, breath deeply and let it go.

And that is what makes all the difference.
